For those who are trying to eat healthy, special occasions can be full of challenges and temptations to get you off track. These are times when you have to be prepared to find alternatives or to just politely say no.

Christmas, birthdays and holidays are full of good eats and wonderful treats, but also hide pitfalls for the health conscious. It is hard to say say no when everyone keeps offering your homemade fudge, cake, punch, fried food and goodies that will expand your waistline. You can do it if you are prepared and know how to find an alternative to these tempting but dangerous treats.

The first step is to learn to say no politely. People will understand and often admire your self-control. You have to remember that one treat may lead to another. The saying that “just one won’t hurt you” may be true, but it’s hard to stop after just one. You should also not feel guilty about turning down these treats. Your body will be grateful for your strong assertion to stay healthy.

You can also look for alternative snacks to eat. People will often have nuts, vegetables and other items on the table that you can hook onto when the treats are near. When the goodies come out, head straight for the vegetable tray and stay there. Keep carrots, broccoli and other healthy treats close by to ensure that you won’t be tempted. If you are bringing an item, cook up something that you know you can eat. This will help you to stay trim, fit and active throughout the holidays.

When you choose to eat out, you are often unaware of the quality of the food and how it is prepared. There are ways to safely eat out if you do your research and are careful where you eat.

The first step is to check the nutritional information and reviews about various restaurants in your area. This is often available through the internet, and many restaurants will give you a nutritional fact sheet. You can narrow down your options by ruling out fast food restaurants that fry most of the foods they serve and use cheaper quality meat and produce. Family owned and run establishments usually are safer, using fresh produce and cook food more carefully.

Keep a list of the places that you have found are safe to eat at so you have a ready reference when it comes time to choose. If you are in an area you are not familiar with, your choices may be limited. Check the menu carefully for items that you can order with a relative amount of security, such as salads. Avoid using salad dressings that are commercially made as they may contain ingredients you may not want to ingest. The safest thing to order is vinegar and oil.

Many restaurants now offer a low-carb menu for the health conscious, including vegetable choices like green beans and side salads. This is a positive swing in the right direction. When possible, order from a senior or children’s menu if allowed. These are smaller portions than the regular meals that are served.

Vegetarians probably had it right all along. Eating meat is not good for humans or animals. Even though the traditional arguments of ethics and health are valid, the most important reason to switch to a vegetarian diet might be due to the effects of factory farming on global warming.

Image via Wikipedia

In the past few years both the University of Chicago and the United Nations issued reports that eating less meat will help the curb the effects of global warming. It works similar to rationing. Meat can still be a part of a healthy diet, but consuming massive amounts of meat contributes to the problem. The size of the American population dictates that factory farms must mass produce meats to feed our voracious appetites. The United Nations estimated that more greenhouse emissions are created by raising livestock then by all of the cars, trains, boats, planes and buses in the world.

One of the biggest problems with consuming meat is that the diet clears our best natural defense against global warming. Millions of acres of forests and plants are uprooted to clear the way for fields and farms.

As emerging economies in China and India grow so has their appetite for meat, which has the potential to turn a bad situation to a dire one. Despite all of our advances as a civilization humans still do not understand the long term consequences of altering our ecosystem. Raising temperatures even a few degrees can cause massive changes to our environment. This is a change that our fragile civilization would struggle to face. Rather than attempt to resolve a disaster before it happens, preventative medicine seems to be the best cure. Eating less meat is a good first step.

Is eating meat ethical?

Beyond the other problems that consumption of meat causes the concerns over the feelings of the animals rarely makes much of an impact on the debate. At this point in human civilization should the issue at least be considered? Can a truly civilized society take part in the slaughter of billions of animals annually when other viable options exist?

What does it say about human civilization that the torture and slaughter of animals occurs as an after thought? If killing for convenience occurs so easily with animals how far away is that action from exploiting humans?

Consuming massive amounts of meat is a relatively new part addition to human diet. A more traditional human interaction with animals has been to work side-by-side with them to plow fields and ensure that enough food is available to the family. In many parts of the world oxen are still an important part of providing food for a family.

For centuries human lived as hunters and gathers. Our diets consisted mostly of plants. One of the things that allowed humans to thrive has been our ability to adapt and eat almost anything. Humanity ate animal flesh when nothing else was available, but it was not the first option.

Mechanization changed this. Harvesting animals became easy. Factory farms grow animals like crops and slaughter them at will. At no point in this process is the life of the animal ever considered.

Causing the suffering of countless creatures for our convenience is having devastating effects on our environment and our health. Even though those selfish reasons might cause humans to cut back on the amount of meat our plates, another reason to stop already exists.

Is our diet killing us?

The issue has been a hot button topic recently due to the release of movies such as Forks over Knives, which argues that despite our advances in technology Americans are sicker than ever. Some reports estimate that as many as two-thirds of Adults are overweight. For all of the treatments that science can offer people, the simple solution of a proper diet seems to be overlooked.

Image via Wikipedia

The documentary comes with the message that a diet based on consuming plants cures nearly every scourge that modern medicine cannot defeat. A nutritionist conducting research in the Philippines noticed that people in the upper class suffered from cancer at much higher rates that those that did not eat an animal products based diet.

Further research noted that in third-world countries with little access to animal products conditions such as cancer were unheard of. The facts soon became clear. People are healthier if they choose not to eat meat.

The problem with the findings is that it goes against traditions, industries and addictions. Eating animals might not be good for humans, but the taste and the process has become a part of our culture and diets.

As science continues to prove that diet is the most important aspect of preventative medicine the question is becomes will people change? Does knowing that an animal based diet will shorten your lifespan mean that people will abandon traditions and their favorite foods?

Even though it sounds dramatic, evidence is mounting that deciding your next meal can be a life or death decision. Tasting good might be a temporary pleasure, but it could mean plenty of suffering down the road.

There are some exclusions to a vegetarian, and while not all would agree, fish is usually something that is on the menu. For that special dinner with guests, or those that enjoy the vegetarian lifestyle, consider serving fish steaks or fillets so warm up the evening. This can easily be done by grilling, baking, or by blackening with spices and cooking on a stove top. Fish cooks very quickly, so dinners with this product are a quick fix.

How To Serve Fish In Style

Serve fish with a delicate white wine. This is a great way to cleanse the pallet and have a fresh taste for all of the food items. Serve with a salad topped with tofu and drizzled with a white vinaigrette. Include cranberries, cheese, or croutons to top of the side. Then consider some form of starch like a pasta, or potato. It is key to have something that is light in weight so that it does not overpower the main course.

For dessert, choose something rich and creamy. There are many vegetarian desserts available, and most have a thick chocolate main ingredient. Making chocolate vegan style is the best way to have a creamy and rich dessert, as the use of soy makes the chocolate absolutely delectable.

Some of the fish choices include salmon, bass, and tuna. These can also be served tartar which is a partially cooked form of serving fish, yet is healthy and extremely tasty. Impress your guests at your next meal with fish in style.

Vegan diets can be the strictest of the vegetarian diets simply because any product related to an animal is not considered acceptable. For most this includes cheese, any type of dairy, eggs, and even butter or lard. Many wonder what can actually be eaten on a vegan diet, and the answer is simple, anything that grows from the ground is all clear for a vegan diet.

Eating Out Vegan Style

There are many vegan restaurants available today to cater to those that have a vegan diet. For those that are unable to find such a place, most menus offer a section reserved just for this type of diet. The choices offered look like they should be on a regular menu, but are just using a soy replacement instead of meat or an animal product. Many of the choices available include:

1. Tofu topped salads that include almonds, cranberries, shoestring carrots and Romano lettuce, then dressed with a vinaigrette dressing. This salad is perfect for those that are being weight conscious as well. The tofu is the perfect substitute for meat, and provides a filling and tasteful substance that compliments any meal.

2. Stews, chili, or ground beef alternatives are made with beans, soy, or juices. Beats, potato starches, and other such flavors offer a great alternative to regular sauces used for cooking.

3. Vegan desserts are tasty and delightful. Chocolate is made with soy milk instead of cow milk, giving the substance a creamier and richer texture that is optimal for glazes and use with fruit.

Vegetarian diets do not need to be boring, or limited to just a handful of foods. There are so many delightful meat substitutions that offer nice texture, and can compliment just about every thing that is placed with them. Items like Tofu, soy analogs, and beans are great ways to make any recipe that requires meat a perfect delight.

Knowing What Substitute To Use

Image via Wikipedia

It is important to understand the texture, consistency, and required cooking method when using meat alternative products. They will enhance the meal when used correctly, or taste terrible if overcooked or handled improperly.

1. Tofu is an item that comes looking like either cubes of cheese, or in a larger sized block. This material is great for soups, making dips with, or layering like with lasagna or quesadillas. Tofu tends to take on the taste of what it is accompanying, and it is a great product for many vegetarian meals.

2. Soy analog is a fantastic meat alternative that is used like ground beef. This product can also be used as a spread like with grilled cheese sandwiches. This products cooks extremely fast, has a nice hint of flavor, and accepts seasoning quite well.

3. Beans are a tasty way to fatten up texture for a meal. This is also a fantastic form of protein, something that is essential for a vegetarian diet. They offer a nice round taste without interfering with the other flavors. This product can be ground or pureed, and used in foods like tacos, chili, or as a topping for salads.

Vegans choose not to eat animal products or byproducts. If that is you, you may be looking for a place to get great food choices. Buying vegan food does not have to be a complex process once you find a trusted provider offering the assortment of foods you want. As you look around at your local grocery stores and become discouraged, remember that specialty stores carry a larger selection and can provide you with the guidance you need for creating your favorite vegan dishes.

Tips for Buying Vegan Food

When it comes to buying vegan food, you need to know what is available that fits into your menu choices. Don’t feel limited by the options available to you.

Be sure to purchase whole foods as much as possible. Purchase whole, fresh vegetables and fruits. These are the best way to know what you are getting.

Read the labels on the foods you do buy. Some specialty providers label vegan foods with the “V” symbol to make finding it easy.

Look for foods that contain tofu. Tofu is an excellent source of nutrients. You can find it in many food types including faux meat, yogurt, and cheese products.

You can find some foods prepared for you, including popular options like tahini, miso and hummus. Buy from a trusted provider to ensure a true vegan composition.

To find specialty stores like this, use a service such as Canada 411. Search for local providers that specialize in vegan and whole foods. When you find a few options, compare their selection of products. Ask questions of the associates there to ensure you are getting a truly vegan product you’ll love.

Raw vegetables are always better with something on them; however, most of what you can possibly put on top of raw vegetables are generally high in fat and remove the diet function. Here are some lighter ideas for dipping veggies…

Light Cream Cheese and Light Sour Cream

Depending on the brand, most light cream cheese and sour cream contains about 2 to 5 grams of fat, but they also usually come with a little Vitamin A, Calcium, and protein. While by itself, each make a decent vegetable dip, you can also spice it up by adding vegetables to it. For instance, sour cream, artichoke hearts, light mozzarella cheese, a little garlic and onion make a great artichoke dip you can serve warm. A little chopped cranberries and blueberries mixed into cream cheese might add a little sweeter taste for raw broccoli.

Organic Greek Yogurt

High in Potassium, Protein, and Calcium, Organic Greek Yogurt is generally the best of all the yogurts available, and the plain yogurt can often be a great substitute for mayonnaise. So imagine some of your favorite dips that call for mayonnaise and use yogurt instead (such as Ranch). In addition, some of the flavored yogurts might be a delicious dip of themselves for fruits and certain vegetables (such as dipping carrots into honey flavored yogurt seasoned with a little brown sugar).

1% Milk Fat Cottage Cheese

High in calcium and protein, cottage cheese also offers a little Vitamin A and Iron as well as taste. You can add some peppers, onion, tomatoes, and lime juice, or you can focus on seasonings. It’s also tasty in spinach and artichoke dips (which is really good on celery).

From cheeseburgers to Philly Cheese steaks to a simple Bologna sandwich, the majority of your popular sandwiches contain some meat leaving grilled cheese and Peanut Butter and Jelly as meatless popular choices. So, if you are vegetarian and love sandwiches, you have to get a little creative. Sandwiches are mainly comprised of two main components: the crust and the “meat.”

For the crust, most people use bread. You don’t have to use bread. You can use many types of breads and obvious sandwich choices like croissants, submarines, flat bread, pita wraps, bagels, English muffins, etc. You can also get creative and use Fried Plantains, cut length-wise and deep fried until lightly browned and seasoned for taste. You can also use pancakes and waffles, potatoes, or even make sweet sandwiches out of cake or blueberry muffins. The sky’s the limit with your choice; however, some can make for a messy sandwich.

As for the meat, the substance of the sandwich, you don’t have to actually use meat. Popular options include vegetarian burgers, different cheeses and vegetables, and then of course, peanut butter. But, you don’t have to stop there. You can mix rice and cheese and a little sauce with seasonings to create a vegetarian Sloppy Joe. Most people dip bread into spinach and artichoke dip, so why not turn that into a sandwich? For breakfast, you could slice some seedless watermelon and remove the rind (unless you usually eat the rind), slap that between two waffles, and top with a fruity salsa you made with chopped strawberries and kiwi and some honey.

If you are planning a wedding, you may have wondered about the menu for the reception. Should you include vegetarian options? How many will you need? As these questions are approached, there are some tips that you can consider for your wedding.

From the diamonds on the rings to the choices on the reception menu, try not to be too worried over the details – whether important or not. Vegetarian dishes may seem like a tough task, but there are mainstream options that will integrate quite well and appeal to any person, vegetarian or not.

It is practical and necessary to include at least a few options for vegetarian guests at a wedding reception. While a full-scale vegetarian menu is not needed, chances are that there will be some vegetarians at your wedding. Don’t worry about integrating these options in the menu, however.

Vegetarian options can be integrated into the menu quite easily. Soups and salads are perfect appetizers at a wedding, for instance. A pasta dish for an entree as a choice is a mainstream menu option at any wedding – and one that doesn’t need meat in the dish. As easy as some of these choices are, you arguably don’t even need a “vegetarian menu” so to speak, just choices on the menu that will be perfect for vegetarians.

A couple of vegetarian options for each course is acceptable for the reception menu. Pasta dishes, soups and salads, and pizza (as an appetizer) are all perfect examples. You can easily include some of these into your wedding.

Ever have those evenings where you really don’t want to go to the store just to get the 2 ingredients you are missing from a recipe? Unless you are Old Mother Hubbard and your cupboards are truly bare, here are some food ideas to get you started creating recipes based on what you do have.

Lasagna

The popular recipe for lasagna calls for lasagna noodles, ground beef, ricotta cheese, marinara sauce, and the likes; however, not all lasagna has to be the same. Many vegetable lasagna recipes exist in addition to Mexican/Taco Lasagnas. The true basic recipe for lasagna is lasagna noodles, some sort of sauce, and some cheese to hold it all together, and the cheese is optional. For a sauce, you may decide to mix some taco seasoning with rice and corn and a little sour cream and mix it together, and seal the deal with some cheddar jack. No lasagna noodles? No fear, you can then consider the next option, casseroles.

Casseroles

The basic concept of a casserole is to throw a bunch of food into a pan and bake it. You can do chicken and noodles and vegetables inspired by some chicken noodle soups, or you can mix rice, fruit, and some pudding. Don’t forget to try to create a crispy topping like bread crumbs, crackers, or cereal.

Rice

The basic recipe for rice (and not the minute kind) is to use two parts liquid to one part rice, and add a little salt and butter. You don’t have to use water as a liquid, and you are allowed to add things like black eyed peas, beans, vegetables, fruits, seasonings, etc. It’s best to stick all ingredients in the pot and then bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 20 minutes.

Image via Wikipedia

Cranberries are most commonly known for their ability to prevent urinary tract infections as they make it difficult for bacteria to stick to your mouth, stomach, and urinary tract. They also contain Vitamin A (great for eye sight), Vitamin C (immune power), and Vitamin K (good for the blood) as well as antioxidants which are suggested to be healthy for the heart and immune system and could possibly reduce the risk of cancer.

Cranberries are often consumed in fruit juices, sauces and jellies, as well as used in many desserts, cereals, breads, and scones. Dried cranberries are often used in trail mixes, but some of the vitamins are reduced in the drying process, especially if sugars are added for taste. The bulk of cranberry related sales are more attributed to the sauces and juices than the actual fruit; however, if you are trying to buy or use cranberries, you want them to be red, plump, and they should bounce. If you are drinking cranberry juice to help prevent urinary tract infections, you will want to find a juice that doesn’t use sucralose (Splenda) because that feeds the bacteria that cause UTIs.

Here are some other uses for cranberries…

Add to your salad – house salad, chicken salad, potato salad – and your vegetable sides like green beans, corn, spinach, squash…

Mix it in wild rice

You can mix it with fruit in pies like a Cranberry Apple Pie as well as gelatin molds like Cranberry Pineapple

Cheesecake, pancakes, and waffles (either as a topping or mixed in)

Ice cream topping

Salsas (such as cranberry, pineapple, cilantro, green pepper, jalapeno pepper, and onion)

Decorations to dishes and cakes

As one of the cheaper fruits one can purchase, watermelon is also incredibly healthy. Here are some of the awesome things, some of which are difficult to pronounce, that are found in watermelon.

Lycopene

Recent studies suggest watermelon may have the highest amounts of lycopene over any other fruit or vegetable (including tomatoes). Lycopene is what gives color to the fruit and vegetables, and studies suggest it may have anti-oxidant qualities such as prevention of certain cancers.

Arginine and Citrulline

These are two nutrients found in watermelon that helps promote cardiovascular health by increasing nitric oxide and thereby relaxing blood vessels. Experts believe this may be beneficial to help treat angina, high blood pressure, obesity, type2 diabetes, and erectile dysfunction. Citrulline can be mostly found in the rind of the watermelon, the part nobody really eats, but the fruit itself does contain it as well.

Vitamin A

Watermelon contains Beta Carotene that is converted by the body into Vitamin A, which promotes good eye sight and helps neutralize free radicals.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can promote healthy arteries and reduce the risk of high blood pressure. In addition, Vitamin C can help prevent colds and boost the immune system. It’s also great for gums, allergies, skin, and decreasing blood sugar.

Vitamin B6

Some studies suggest Vitamin B6 can reduce the risk of heart disease, morning sickness, depression, and PMS. It also helps break down proteins and create antibodies. It is considered safe if taken from food sources; however, supplements can cause some negative side effects.

Thiamine

A B-Vitamin that helps metabolize carbs into energy, Thiamine also is great brain food helping improve memory and reduce depression. Thiamine deficiencies can cause fatigue, weight loss, irritability, and other negative symptoms.

Potassium

An electrolyte that benefits the heart and bones, Potassium helps balance the body’s PH and can help prevent muscle spasms.

Magnesium

Every part of the body needs magnesium. It’s also a natural muscle relaxer and laxative. Teamed up with Vitamin B6, it can help reduce symptoms of PMS.

If you are looking to diversify your side dishes beyond the potatoes and rice, plantains offer a little variety. Plantains are pretty much bananas, but they are bigger and not as sweet. Like bananas, when they are green, they are less sweet than when they ripen to a yellow and black. They are pretty popular in tropical environments such as Puerto Rico. While many different recipes exist for cooking with plantains, here’s a couple popular uses….

Tostones (pronounced like toe stone ays) is a delicious side dish or appetizer using plantains at their green phase. You peel it, slice it like you would a banana for a bowl of Cheerios, and then deep fry the slices. When they start to float (maybe a minute), take them out, and then smash each piece flat. Re-fry until it starts to brown. Season with some salt. A great dipping sauce is the Puerto Rican condiment Mayoketchup. Simply mix two parts mayonnaise to one part ketchup and a little garlic.

You can take Tostones one step further and create Mofongo. Popular in Puerto Rico, Mofongo is pretty much tostones, garlic butter, and a meat like pork or shrimp mashed together resulting in a look similar to lumpy mashed potatoes. You can use any meat or vegetable or any combination that sounds appealing. Just line a mortar with a seasoned buttery spread (like garlic and butter), add 3 parts warm tostones to one part meat/vegetables (cooked if meat, and cooked or uncooked if vegetables is up to you, and cut up in small bite sized pieces), and then mash it together with a pestle. It does cool quickly, and is best if not re-heated.

If your plantains turned a yellow black color on you, you can make a Mexican dessert. Slice them long ways and then in half and fry until browned on all sides. Sprinkle some Cinnamon and sugar on them, and maybe even top with some Sweetened Condensed Milk and Whipped Topping. You can also add other fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.

Many people in the world have never tried or even heard of tofu. Even less people have heard of a tofurkey. A tofurkey is an excellent addition or substitution on thanksgiving. A tofurky is a turkey made out of tofu. Molds can be bought or even hand molding is appropriate. The tofu is bout and molded into a giant turkey and the center can even be hollowed out to cook stuffing inside. After the tofurkey is shaped then the mold goes into the oven. Turkey gravy and any other kind of seasoning can be added to make the tofurkey taste exactly like a turkey. A tofurkey is a great substitute for people who don’t eat meat, or people looking for a less filling, healthier celebratory meal. Here are some of the benefits of Tofurkey’s.

Benefits of Tofurkey’s

1. Healthy- The greatest benefit of a tofurkey is how healthy it is. Tofurkey is not only a great source of protein, but it also is easily digested by the body and contains little to no fat. This means that all the fat and triptiphan that is found in turkey is not eaten when consuming a tofurkey.

2. Simple- One of the biggest hassles to making a celebratory lunch or dinner is that it takes forever. Sometimes preparing, cooking, and carving a turkey can take hours. However, tofurkey takes no longer than an hour to cook and even less time to prepare it. A tofurkey is great for people who don’t have the time or simply don’t want to slave in the kitchen all day.

Tofurkey’s are the healthy Thanksgiving feast of the future. They are easy to make, and even easier to clean up. Try and make one, you’ll see how good and easy it is.

These days having a dinner party means knowing what your guests eat. Before 15 or 20 years ago the host made food and every one ate it. Now, with more and more people omitting things from their diets it has become increasingly more important that dinner hosts understand what there guests will and will not eat. For those carnivores who are having that next dinner party, knowing a few vegetarian or vegan dish ideas will save the embarrassment of having someone not be able to eat or have to explain that they don’t eat meat. Remember these days not every one the same things.

Vegetarian Cooking Ideas

1. Salads- A cook cannot go wrong with a salad. How many times at restaurant has somebody heard a customer say, “oh, I’ll just have a salad.” Having a salad available for dinner guests will ensure that if there are any vegan or vegetarian guests that they won’t be left out.

2. Tofu- Tofu is the modern day everything kind of food. Tofu can go with just about any sauce on any dish and taste just fine. It can be served cold or warm and can even be disguised to taste like most other foods. Tofu is something that most vegetarians and vegans like and is an excellent source of protein and other nutrients. Tofu can even be made into a turkey or tofurkey.

3. Eggplant- Eggplant is excellent dish that can be made in several ways. It is starchy and filling so guests will enjoy it and has an excellent texture. Cooked eggplant or baked eggplant is the best way to prepare it, but having some baked eggplant handy can ensure that no one will be left at the table not eating.

As both schools of science and nutrition expand and move into the future, the human race begins to learn more and more about the food they eat and the way it affects their bodies. First it was burnt hot dogs and burnt marshmallows. Then it was diet soda and milk. But now scientists are pointing to the inability of the human body to effectively break down meat compounds.

The general belief now is that because cows and pigs and all the meat they we eat, eats other things itself, that the human body then has to expand as much energy that the animal would have to, to break down the food in their stomach, as well as, the energy to break down the food in our stomach ie. the cow. This process is harmful to the body is several ways. Here are just a few of those ways that meat puts stress on the body.

Two Ways Meat is Bad for the Body

1. Aging- Scientists believe that aging is directly linked to how much energy the body has to spend. Therefore, caloric intake would cause the body to age faster and since there are so many calories and so much energy used during the meat eating process it causes the body to age faster.

2. Harm to Organs- The bodies inability to effectively break down meat products causes more wear and tear on the body. This usually means that internal organs used in digestion will either be harmed or have problems later in life.

This information does not mean that meat should not be eaten, or that it can’t be part of a balanced diet, but it does mean that meat should be consumed responsibly which means not as often and such large quantities.

If you’re opening a vegetarian restaurant, there is less competition in the marketplace. That also means that there may be less traffic, since the majority of Americans are not vegetarians. However, there is a rise in the health food industry, and by knowing your target market, you can turn this interest into your advantage. You can create a “green” vegetarian restaurant.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that you use organic, fresh, local produce whenever possible. Several restaurants market their use of organic produce, even if 100% of their food is not organic. If you have a number of pure organic items on your menu and list all the organic ingredients you use in the other items, that will be good enough to draw people into your restaurant and feel like they have made a healthier choice.

The other thing you can do is to use energy efficient restaurant supplies. Examples include energy efficient ovens, refrigerators, fryers, steamers, dishwashers, and ice makers. Not only will you save money on electricity, you can advertise this on your menu or marketing material to show that you are making a serious effort towards environmental sustainability.

You can purchase restaurant supplies such as “sustainable” dinnerware. Such dinnerware is made of renewable material such as bamboo. If you have take-out available at your restaurant, consider using alternatives to styrofoam. You can use recycled paper products or reusable containers.

Although eco-friendly restaurant supplies may be the most salient features of your restaurant, to make your customer’s experience complete, consider providing a recycling bin in your restaurant along with a regular trash can.

Most importantly, be sure to advertise all that you do in your restaurant to make it “green.” That way, customers will be aware of what you do and be proud to support your efforts towards sustainability.

Steak is not normally part of a vegetarian diet, but eaten with the consideration that to much can cause early aging, and stomach problems can make eating steak less frequently a whole lot easier. However, the saying goes that every thing in moderation is ok, as long as it is in moderation. Therefore, a little quality cut, perfectly cooked steak is ok as long as it’s every once in a while and not every other day. So if a person wants to indulge and have as steak once in a while, it is important that the steak be good and quality assured. There’s nothing more unhealthy than a steak that has been sitting at the grocery store for a while, or one that has more fat than it does meat. Here are few places for those occasional indulger’s to find a great steak.

Three Quality Steak Companies

1. Omaha Steaks- Omaha Steaks is Nebraska’s premiere steak wholesaler and meat provider. Omaha steaks are of the finest quality and have a time honored reputation of delivering there orders across the United States, in a timely, and quality manner. Buying Omaha steaks means getting the best quality meat with no preservatives. it can be picked up or ordered on line.

2. Kansas City Steak Company- The Kansas City Steak company is one of the world largest meat providers. They are located in Kansas City Missouri, but ship to every where in the world. Like Omaha Steak’s, the Kansas City Steak company provides only the best dry aged meat in the world and comes with a guarantee that every piece will be fresh and amazing.

3. Chicago Steak Company- Located in the heart of the midwest the Chicago Steak Company has been around since 1865.

Milk is a staple of many diets all over the world and for quite some time. Well, not as long as most people think. Considering the amount of time that humans have been on this earth, milk has not been drank very long. Every one has seen the adds that profess the greatness of milk and multitude of vitamins and minerals it provides the body. These ads may not be as true as they once were. Scientists are now finding that milk has some bad attributes to it, and that consuming the amount of milk that we do these days could be more detrimental to peoples health than not consuming it. Here are a few reasons why milk might not be so good anymore.

Reasons why Milk Might be bad

1. BGH- BGH is known as bovine growth hormone. For the past two decades or so companies, and more specifically large, corporations have been buying the large majority of cattle stock in the United States. After they purchased the cows they began to give them the bovine growth hormone to make them bigger so they could produce more milk. This has had negative effects on not only the cows themselves but the milk the produce and researchers strongly feel that BGH is responsible for the deleting the natural immunities that children have from birth.

2. Pasteurization- When companies pasteurize their milk, they take out all the vitamins and nutrients and then add them back in after the pasteurization and homogenization process. Doing so renders the healthy benefits of the milk powerless to help the human body to grow or maintain itself. The vitamins thus become irrelevant.

3. Over consumption- Scientists believe that the body does not convert milk to energy very easily, which is a large part of the reason for so many people being allergic to it. Over consumption of milk is bad for the body and breaks down important internal organs used during the digestion of foods.

Knowing where to buy milk and how much to buy can make the difference between it being healthy or not.

One of the most commonly heard arguments of people who are switching from a carnivorous to a vegetarian diet is that they feel tired all the time. The same principles that apply to a carnivorous diet also apply to a vegetarian or vegan diet. If person were to eat sugar cereal all the time or simply just eat steak every day and nothing else, then they would lost there energy to. If a person wants to have energy and eat a vegan diet then they must understand what foods in the diet provide them with energy and sustainability. Here are few foods that provide energy for customers.

Staying Energetic on a Vegan Diet

1. Black beans- Black beans are a great source of protein and will provide the body with extended energy. The nice thing about black beans is that they can be paired with many different types of food and can be eaten cold or warm.

2. Lentils- Lentils another great source of protein and will provide a balanced vegetarian diet with the amount protein and energy required to stay healthy and feel great.

3. Couscous- Couscous is a dish that can be made several different ways and also provides a protein and starches to help keep the body strong and alert all day. Even though couscous is starchy it will not bog the body down.

4. Tofu- Tofu is one of the most excellent sources of protein for the body and contains no empty calories or saturated fats. Tofu is one of the most effective eating tools in keeping the energized.

5. Vitamin B complex- For vegetarians who feel they need more energy a vitamin b complex should be paired with the diet in order to give the body the b vitamins they don’t get from meat.

Staying energetic on a vegetarian diet is the same as staying energetic on any other diet. Knowing what to eat and when is the best way to get energy of food.

Why Donate

Vegetarianism and Veganism is crucial to the survival of humans, animals and the well being of the planet. We belong to a circle, were everything on this planet affects the lives of all other things. For example, the exploitation and cutting down of the rein forests is creating global warming, as well as depleting the natural resources of South America and the homes of all the animals that live in that area. When everything is depleted, the ecosystem will be off balance and to bring the world back into equilibrium, the planet will do what is necessary, as it has for the last 4.6 billion years.

Spreading the word of vegetarianism/veganism is a time and economical draining effort, but the cost of not informing others is incalculable. Your donation and support will allow this website to stay in operations, will allow us to grow in members and we will be able to spread our word farther. Hoping to one day reach every person on this planet.

Remember, we have not inherited the Earth from our past, we are borrowing from our future.

Please

and help make a difference

A vegan is an individual who avoids eating dairy and animal products. This includes foods such as milk, eggs, fish and honey. Some choose to become vegans for political or environmental reasons, while others follow the vegan diet due to health issues. When you live in Raleigh apartments, you might find that the South isn’t an area known for its vegetarianism. This doesn’t mean you have to starve. There are several restaurants in the Raleigh area that offer vegan dining.

If you plan to dine with some non-vegan friends, head on over to Cafe Harmony, which offers both meat and vegetarian foods. Itspecializes in serving natural and organic food, with vegan milk, desserts and meals. It even has a juice bar. If you are a soup lover, you might want to try a meal at the Zest Cafe. You can have vegan dishes made upon request and sample vegan soup daily.

If you are looking for some ethnic choices, try going to Dalat Oriental Restaurant. The Dalat Oriental offers Vietnamese food and offers vegan options made with soy products. If you want something on the menu that isn’t vegan, just talk with your server. They are happy to make the menu option vegan for you upon request. Another benefit of going to this restaurant is that it is known for its large portions. Another great ethnic restaurant offering ethnic food is the Neomonde Baking Company. This restaurant offers Middle Eastern dishes.

Coffee lovers can also enjoy a nice trip out without worries. The Third Place Cafe offers coffee drinks with rice milk and soy milk. If you want to try another place, take a trip over to Sosta Cafe. This is a European coffee shop that also serves salads made to order. It uses ingredients such as breads and produce that are locally made and grown.

New York City is known the world over for its tourist attractions, its bustling pace, its high-quality theatre…and, that’s right, its delicious food. Restaurants of all kinds line the streets, ready to satisfy the lover of any cuisine. That goes for vegetarians, too—in fact, NYC is home to a plethora of places specialty tailored to the vegetarian crowd. Uptown, downtown, Brooklyn, Manhattan; fellow vegetarians live throughout the big city, so you’ll always have somewhere to go. Here are two reasonably-priced spots with multiple locations, so whenever you need that vegetarian fix you won’t have far to look.

Zen Palate:

Zen Palate prides itself on providing fusion vegetarian food…but not just that. This spot focuses on respecting health and the environment, and the people who partake. With locations in the Theatre District, Upper West Side, and Union Square areas, it’s easy to find the noodles, rice, and dessert dishes that make Zen Palate front and center of any discerning New York foodie’s list.

Hummus Place:

The Hummus Place, as the name suggests, focuses its food offerings on the nutritious, tasty, vegetarian chickpea concoction. This popular city locale has multiple restaurants in both the East and West Villages, as well as the Upper West Side. It combines its namesake dish with other Middle Eastern staples such as tabule and baklawa to create a tasty vegetarian experience.

Stop in any borough of the city and you’re sure to find the perfect vegetarian restaurant. And remember, there are also plenty of places with vegetarian options that aren’t strictly vegetarian. If it’s a vegetarian restaurant experience you seek, though, New York City is the place to be.

It’s bigger than you think, this digital age we’re right smack in the middle of. Don’t be intimidated, though–even though the World Wide Web has gotten so huge. It’s so monumental that every topic or issue you can possibly think of is exploding onto the scene at an alarming rate due to the continued shattering of information breakwaters. Anyone can know anything online now.

This can be a good thing on many levels: one in particular, the culinary industry.

Think of the possibilities of new kinds of food being introduced to revolutionize your palate and revamp every restaurant or grocery store ever in existence. The topic is now vegan diets, no surprise there, of course; and for sure, culinary institutes are the place to go if possessing the passion to learn about it. Now with the onset of online degrees thanks to this digital era, more and more students can pursue a profession in cooking, learning about vegetarian cooking–and then opening more and more restaurants that can provide those types of cooking. After all, the movement of Meatless Mondays has been going global for awhile now with the likes of Oprah and Mario Batali on board.

Think about the ramifications of this amazing development. Because of the digital era, because of the rise of online education, the culinary culture and quality can single-handedly change to the point when vegetarians are not a minority but an equal ratio to the regular diet of meats. Simply put in the effort to attend online classes dedicated to the culinary arts, and you’re miles ahead of learning the ins and outs of an industry that is ripe with discovery.

It’s an amazing time for the quality of life–all because of the digital era, because of the convenience of online education. Look to the future and put on your shades, because it’s going to be bright.

For vegetarians and vegans planning a celebration with carnivore friends, finding the perfect mix of food can be a daunting task. Meat-loving guests may balk at nontraditional fare, especially when it comes to holiday basics. Still, your special occasion doesn’t need to cause anxiety. Instead, surprise and impress guests—of all dietary preferences—with your cooking savvy and party ingenuity.

Find the Perfect Recipe:

The first easy step any vegetarian host can take is a simple online search. Countless exciting vegetarian and vegan recipes abound on the web. There, you can pick and choose recipes for specific needs. Planning a birthday bash? Vegan cake recipes turn the requisite (and possibly intimidating) celebratory baking easy. Need a romantic Valentine’s Day meal? A simple search reveals innumerable romantic possibilities.

Old Favorites:

Holidays indeed can strike fear into any host, including the vegetarian cooking up a special occasion for finicky, meat-eating family. Here, too, creative cooking can get the job done. Tasty stand-ins for old favorites keep the entire family satisfied. Thanksgiving, for instance, can pose a tricky situation for stalwart supporters of traditional food. But a menu of vegetarian stuffing and tofu turkey keeps the family together. And don’t forget to finish the occasion with some vegan pumpkin pie!

Dessert Envy:

Delicious desserts are the way to anybody’s heart. Skeptics might be reluctant to try, but your kitchen skills will prove that vegetarian and vegan alternatives live up to—and often surpass—typical dessert offerings. Nearly everything, from sorbet to cupcakes, pudding to peanut butter, exists in vegan form, and can transform any hesitating dessert aficionado.

Though others may initially be hesitant, your special day can satisfy vegetarians and carnivores alike. Combining traditional substitutes with interesting innovations is a surefire recipe for a successful celebration.

Staying true to a vegetarian lifestyle can be tricky even in familiar surroundings. Throw some travel into the mix, and you could have a recipe for disaster. So, what’s a worldly vegetarian to do? Here are some tricks to avoid common dilemmas on your next adventure abroad:

Research cuisine before your trip: Committed vegetarians may be surprised to find that food they steer clear of is a staple in the diet of, well, everyone they encounter at their travel destination. Before traveling, familiarize yourself with common cuisine. This will help you recognize veggie-friendly options—and know what plates to avoid

The importance of language: If you’re lucky enough to be well-versed in the native tongue of the country you visit, you’re ahead of the game. Even if you have to carefully explain your wishes for a dish, you’ll get your point across politely. But if you slept through basic French, there’s still hope. Learn some basic key phrases—not only of food you do and don’t want but also the pleases and thank yous of the land—in the language of the country before you go. It will help you get your point across. Better yet, natives will appreciate the effort.

Ask the expert: Despite being armed with guidebooks and dictionaries, you still might run into some trouble abroad. It never hurts to have someone in the know translate key sentences, such as asking for vegetarian options. Ask a native friend, or the staff at your hotel. They’ll help you get a vegetarian meal, and they’ll know how to express it in the most culturally-appropriate way.

Traveling abroad can be intimidating, especially while staying true to your beliefs. With a little preparation, vegetarianism and travel are completely compatible.
